Year Founded

1828

The Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge becomes the Preston Free Grammar School.

1837

Preston Free Grammar School becomes the Preston Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge and includes literary and scientific subjects.

1850

The Institution is incorporated under the Companies Act as the Preston and Lancashire Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge.

1862

The Harris Free Public Library opens in Preston.

1882

The Harris Institute, named after benefactor Edmund Robert Harris, is opened by Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone.

1956

The school is renamed Harris College.

1962

Harris College becomes a partner institution, with regional colleges and art schools, of the Ministry of Education.

1967

Harris College becomes Preston Polytechnic.

1992

Preston Polytechnic becomes the University of Central Lancashire, as approved by the Privy Council.
