The Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge becomes the Preston Free Grammar School.
Preston Free Grammar School becomes the Preston Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge and includes literary and scientific subjects.
The Institution is incorporated under the Companies Act as the Preston and Lancashire Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge.
The Harris Free Public Library opens in Preston.
The Harris Institute, named after benefactor Edmund Robert Harris, is opened by Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone.
