Year Founded

1883

University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire (Cardiff University’s predecessor institution) was founded.

1893

The College was granted the power to award degrees in its own name.

1904

The College moved to a new purpose-built building in Cathays Park.

1955

The College became a constituent of the University of Wales.

1972

The College became independent, awarding University of Wales degrees.

1997

The College changed its name to Cardiff University, under new UK legislation allowing the title of “university” to be conferred on all colleges with degree-awarding powers.
